Translation:
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9

The opening phrase is remarkable — "Have I not commanded you?" As if courage is something God required, not just suggested. The reason given isn't "because it will go well" but "because I will be with you." The presence of God doesn't remove the danger. It means you're not facing it alone.

More Verses About Courage

For facing a health crisis

"For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline."

2 Timothy 1:7

Timidity — fear that paralyzes — is explicitly not from God. What God gives instead: power, love, and a sound mind. Those three things together are what you need to face a diagnosis, a treatment plan, the hard conversations that come with serious illness.

For facing medical news and what comes next

For standing up for what's right when it costs you

"The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion."

Proverbs 28:1

Those who know they're doing right don't need to look over their shoulder. That's not arrogance — it's the confidence that comes from integrity. In a workplace or organization where everyone's watching who speaks up, righteousness is its own source of boldness.

For when you're the one in the room who has to say it

For courage to change your life

"What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?"

Romans 8:31

Paul asks the question and leaves it open. The answer implied: nothing that can stop you, ultimately. Not the fear of failure. Not the people who say you can't. Not the practical objections. If the path is right and God is for it — move.

For the courage to make a major change

For courage through anxiety

"The LORD is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I be afraid?"

Psalm 27:1

Two metaphors: light (clarity in darkness), and stronghold (protection in danger). David doesn't ask these as rhetorical dismissals. He asks them as anchors. Who? List them. Then notice: God is bigger. The question changes something.

For when anxiety is making you smaller than you are

For being brave for someone who needs you

"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong."

1 Corinthians 16:13

Four imperatives. Direct. No explanation needed. When someone you love is going through something and they need you to be steady — this is the verse to carry. You don't have to feel strong. You have to choose it.

For when you need to be strong for someone else
